Putting Our Focus on Jesus

Matthew 14:30
But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.”

When Peter first stepped out of the boat, all He saw was Jesus. He saw nothing but the one he desired to be with. His focus was on His Lord and His Lord alone. With His focus only on His Lord, he walked on water. But then Peter let his focus shift to his surroundings and down he went.

It is a bit difficult for us to relate to walking on water, but we can all relate to finding ourselves in a place in life where we feel like we are sinking. In these times, we are weak in faith and our doubts are overwhelming to us. Too often we get to this place because we are seeking a way out through our own strengths. Our focus is on our problems and not on the promises of Our Savior.

Peter was rebuked for his lack of faith. We should know that we share in Peter’s weakness. As disciples of Jesus Christ, there is no valid reason why we should be of doubtful mind. Even on the stormiest of days, He is always with us as our ever present help.

Let us put all of our focus on Jesus. Let us learn to follow the life path that He has prepared for us. Let us walk that path boldly even when the world tries to distract us and the enemy tries to deter us. Let us be confidently yoked by faith to Jesus all the way to our eternal resting place with Almighty God.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank You for creating each of us with a unique purpose through which we serve You and bring honor and glory to Your Name. We rejoice in knowing that we are destined to fulfill our purposes here on earth as well as in Your eternal kingdom. We exalt the name of Our Savior, Jesus, who walks along side us to insure that we have the strength to overcome the torments of our flesh and the attacks of the enemy. May we keep our eyes firmly fixed on Jesus so we are not distracted or hindered by the things which are trying to pull us away from our purposes. May we stand before You one day and hear the words, “Well done, My good and faithful servant.” We ask all these things in the name of Our Redeemer, Our King, Our Priest and Our Prophet, Jesus Christ.

When Our Zeal for Christ Dims

Luke 15:8
Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Won’t she light a lamp and sweep the entire house and search carefully until she finds it?

Where will the woman look for her lost coin? This passage infers that she will look everywhere. How long will she look? She will look carefully and extensively until she finds her coin. How will she look? The passage does not specifically reveal how she will look, but it is likely that she would follow the same process that we follow upon losing something. She will go back to the place where she thinks that she lost the coin. If the coin is not there, she will go back to all the other familiar places that she can think of until she finds the coin.

Aren’t we all just as diligent as this woman whenever we lose something that is of value to us? Do we not employ an exhaustive effort to find anything lost that we consider a personal treasure? Of course, we do.

So why do we delay even a second when we recognize that we have lost even a fraction of our zeal for Christ? We should go back immediately to the place where we lost it. Did we lose it because we cut back on our prayer time? We need to return to our most robust prayer habits. Did we lose it because we stopped studying the Word of God? We should return to our diligent studies. Did we lose it because of the sin in our lives? We need to repent and surrender to Christ.

Jesus Christ is our greatest treasure. When the world works overtime to distract us from Our Treasure and our awareness of the presence of Our Treasure dims one iota, let us run quickly to return to the fullness of His Light. If we practice to stay in the fullness of His light, we guard against losing even a portion of Our Treasure.

Let us be fierce protectors of the treasures that we have been given in Jesus Christ. Let us fight mightily against any distraction that comes to diminish the value of the fullness of Our Savior in our lives. Let us seek the Holy Spirit to heighten our awareness of our ever present Treasure and quicken our resolve in keeping Our Treasure above all things in our lives.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank You for giving us the most awesome treasure known to mankind, Your Son, Jesus Christ. In our weakness, Father, we find that we have drifted away from our zeal for Your Son. We pray that You will help us return to the place where we lost Him. We ask that You show us how to invigorate the good discipline in our lives that we once had. We beseech You to give us the strength we need to walk away from the torments of our flesh. Lord, bring us back to the fullness of the Light of Our World, Your Son Jesus. We ask all these things in the precious, precious name of Jesus Christ.

Living Nearer to God

1 Corinthians 10:12
Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.

We must stay on guard against the calling of our flesh and the attacks of the enemy. The weakness that we have in the flesh becomes more dangerous to us when we are indulgent in the things of the world. Therefore, we must be certain to check ourselves against our indulgences lest they will rise beyond our control.

A Christian’s security against sin rests in Jesus Christ alone. He provides ample supply of the oil that we need for our lamps to light our way. He gives freely of the strength that we will need to overcome the callings of our flesh. In Christ, we are enclosed in the arms of everlasting love. In Christ we stand on a foundation that will never fail. In Christ, we are kept by an almighty power that cannot be overcome.

Our biggest snare is our confidence that we can stand against our flesh and the enemy alone. We must be sure to maintain the flow of Christ’s strength in our weakness. The “Prince of Preachers”, Charles Spurgeon, offers the following guidance for maintaining our strength in the Lord. “Be much more in prayer. Spend longer time in holy adoration. Read the Scriptures more earnestly and constantly. Watch your lives more carefully. Live nearer to God.”

Let us guard against building up our confidence in our own abilities. Let us anchor our lives in the presence and promises of Jesus Christ. Let us stand on the Rock as our sure foundation.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank You for promising to perfect Your strength in our weakness. We exalt the name of Jesus who stands beside us and promises never to leave us. We rejoice in the presence of the Holy Spirit who provides us with the strength that we need to overcome every trial and temptation in our lives. We pray, Lord, that You will show us how to draw near to You through our prayers, our worship and our study of Your Holy Word. Help us to be constantly vigilant so that we become bond slaves to Jesus and not to our flesh. May we live in the fullness of Your grace. We ask all these things in the name of the founder and perfecter of our faith, Jesus Christ.
